Get Keel on your screen.
Choose the device you are installing on. Every device starts with a 7-day free trial, and every download is checked against a signed release list.
Keel for Windows
Windows 10 or 11, 64-bit. There is nothing to install: download it, open it and add your playlist. Keel keeps itself up to date.
Keel for Android TV and Google TV
Best on a certified Google TV box with 4K HDR (Chromecast with Google TV, Google TV Streamer, onn 4K Pro and similar). Works on Android 7 and newer, including phones and tablets. Older Fire TV Sticks work but are slow with big playlists.
On a TV box
- On the box, open the Play Store and install Downloader (by AFTVnews).
- Open Downloader, type keelplayer.com/apk and choose Go.
- When asked, allow Downloader to install apps, then choose Install.
- Open Keel. Add your playlist with the remote, or scan the QR code and add it from your phone.
Make it a dedicated Keel box (optional)
- Press Home on the remote. If the box asks which app to use, choose Keel and Always.
- If it does not ask, open the box's Settings, Apps, Default apps, Home app and choose Keel. Keel's own Settings, This device, has a shortcut.
- Boxes that hide that setting (most Google TV models) can be switched once from a computer with adb shell cmd package set-home-activity uk.co.liamjordan.keel/.MainActivity
On a phone or tablet
Open this page on the device, tap Download, then open the file and allow your browser to install apps.
Keel for Raspberry Pi and Linux
A Raspberry Pi behind the TV makes a small, silent Keel box. Pi 4 and Pi 5 play HD and 4K. A Pi Zero 2 W suits a kids' room: Keel switches to its low-memory mode by itself. Your TV's own remote works through the HDMI cable on most TVs.
Raspberry Pi
- Install Raspberry Pi OS (64-bit) with Raspberry Pi Imager. Lite is enough. In the Imager settings, set your Wi-Fi and a user name, and turn on SSH.
- Start the Pi and open a terminal on it, or connect from your computer with ssh user@raspberrypi.local
- Run this. It downloads Keel, checks it and sets the Pi to start straight into Keel on the TV:
curl -fsSL https://keelplayer.com/linux.sh | sh -s -- --kiosk
- Reboot with sudo reboot. Keel opens on the TV.
Linux PC or laptop
Debian 13, Ubuntu 24.04 or newer, 64-bit. This installs Keel with a menu shortcut:
curl -fsSL https://keelplayer.com/linux.sh | sh
Good to know
- Pi 4 decodes H.264 up to 1080p and HEVC up to 4K in hardware. Pi 5 decodes HEVC in hardware. Pi Zero 2 W plays H.264 up to 1080p.
- No HDMI-CEC on your TV? Any USB or Bluetooth remote that works like a keyboard will do.
- Back to a normal desktop: sudo systemctl disable keel-kiosk@$USER && sudo systemctl enable getty@tty1 && sudo reboot
